Dr. Durnin has been in medical practice since 1992, initially in family medicine with 22 years in the addiction field. She provides services to patients across the spectrum of addiction medicine, from harm reduction to sustained recovery. She has been certified by the American, International and Canadian Societies of Addiction Medicine and is recognized as having additional training in this area within family practice. In addition to her work at the Orchard Recovery Center, Dr. Dunrin is a clinical instructor with UBC (University of British Columbia), and has an outpatient practice in the Alliance Clinic in Surrey. She provides outreach services via telehealth. She brings her extensive knowledge of addiction medicine to her work with Orchard clients, including her previous work with Eating Disorders, HIV, Corrections, and the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. She has worked in occupational health, including for WorkSafe BC, is a Medical Review Officer and has a private practice in occupational health and recovery from addiction.

In 2011, Jess was awarded a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Toronto with a specialization in mental health and addictions. Prior to this degree, Jess earned a Master of Arts at York University where she was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant for her research on mood and anxiety disorders. Jess received her clinical training at Toronto General Hospital (General Medicine) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), one of the world’s leading psychiatric research hospitals. While at the CAMH, Jess was trained in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) for the treatment of substance use disorders and concurrent eating disorders. In addition to her clinical work, Jess worked as a research coordinator in the psychology department at Ryerson University and co-investigated several grant funded research projects. Jess has received various awards for excellence in mental health research and has presented her work at several academic conferences. Jess is proficient in a variety of therapeutic interventions including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamically oriented therapy and dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT). In her role as Clinical Program Director, Jess works collaboratively with our dynamic team of clinicians to continually upgrade our curriculum with the latest research and best practices in substance disorder and concurrent disorders treatment.

Barb has worked extensively with marginalized women and men in the areas of addiction, domestic violence and life skills management. Drawing on extensive personal and professional experience, Barb empowers clients to identify the obstacles standing in the way of their recovery and to establish the skills necessary to overcome them. In addition to her work as a counsellor, Barb is the Director of Family Programs at the Orchard. She is passionate about helping families and couples examine their unhealthy patterns of relating and facilitating their movement toward more supportive, healthy relationships. Barb is a certified member of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation and is a Somatic Experience Practitioner (SEP).

Dr. Chodkiewicz, or “Dr. C,” is a psychiatrist, licensed to practice medicine in the province of British Columbia. He was former staff at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, where he practiced inpatient psychiatry for 17 years and was the former Division Head of adult inpatient psychiatric services and Interim Physician Program Director. In addition to Dr. Chodkiewicz’s work with Orchard Recovery Center clients, he is now the Regional Medical Lead of Concurrent Disorders for the Vancouver Coastal Health Region. He is on active staff at Vancouver General Hospital, where he is a member of both the Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison and Complex Pain and Addiction services. Many of the patients he has cared for have suffered from concurrent addiction disorders as well as neurological and cognitive deficits from many sources, including brain injury, as well as having multiple additional psychiatric illnesses such as major depressive disorder, psychotic disorders and various manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Chodkiewicz was a consultant psychiatrist for the Anxiety Disorder Clinic at the University of British Columbia for nine years. Patients seen at this clinic often had complex treatment-refractory anxiety conditions, such as OCD and PTSD, that required both pharmacotherapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Dr. Chodkiewicz completed one year of post-residency CBT training at UBC and subsequently provided many years of CBT treatment to patients as well as structured lectures, CBT training and clinical case supervision to psychiatric residents. Dr. Chodkiewicz has an appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, at the level of Clinical Assistant Professor; in this capacity he has an active and continuous role in the direct teaching and supervision of both medical students and residents in medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Chodkiewicz has also clinically worked in the field of addiction medicine for 27 years and continues to manage patients in the community using opiate agonist treatment (OAT) and integrated psychiatric treatment. Dr. Chodkiewicz provides preceptor training to physicians that have interests in addiction treatment and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (DABAM).

Brooke brings extensive clinical experience treating co-occurring trauma and substance use disorder. Brooke was awarded a master’s degree in social work from the University of Victoria. Her clinical practice has since focused on holistic approaches to treating trauma and substance use disorder. Brooke has worked extensively with Indigenous communities and received specific training in Indigenous cultural safety. She is an active member of the Violence Against Women in Relationship (VAWIR) committee and is currently a registered counsellor with Crime Victims Assistance Program. Brooke is a certified Yoga and 12 Step Recovery Leader and has designed and facilitated several yoga-based wellness programs for addiction recovery. Brooke provides psychoeducational seminars at the Orchard incorporating yoga philosophy and trauma-sensitive yoga practice.

Dr. Porter is a duly qualified family physician licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and certified by the Canadian College of Family Physicians. Dr. Porter earned an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from the University of British Columbia in 1991. She completed her medical training through the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine and went on to complete a two year residency program in Family Medicine through the Department of Family Medicine also at UBC. In addition to Dr. Porter’s work with Orchard clients, she practices family medicine in Vancouver, and Addiction Medicine in Surrey and Burnaby. Dr. Porter is the Medical Director at Charlford House Society for Women with addictions in Burnaby, BC. She has practiced throughout the Lower Mainland of British Columbia as well as in the United States, bringing a broad range of perspectives and outreach to our clients at the Orchard. Dr. Porter is certified to prescribe Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) for both addiction and pain disorders.

Elize Fitzgerald is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the BCACC. She believes that supportive therapy can provide a roadmap to intentional change through increased self-knowledge, greater self-worth, and acceptance of present-moment reality. Her counselling perspective is trauma informed, client-centered and collaborative. She believes every person deserves a life of connection and meaning free from the pain of addiction. Elize has an MA in Counselling Psychology, an MA in Modern Art & Theory and additional psychotherapy training in: EMDR; Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT); Internal Family Systems (IFS); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Gottman Method Couples; Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR); and knowledge of the 12-step philosophy of AA/NA. She has worked with individuals and couples experiencing a range of mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions and chronic pain. She has 13 years of experience working with people in early recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. Elize is originally from London, UK now happily transplanted to beautiful Bowen Island where she lives with her family and her dog.

Miles is a registered social worker with over 20 years of clinical experience specializing in adolescents, emerging adults, parents and families in a variety of addiction and mental health settings. He values client-centered care, and strives to meet clients respectfully and compassionately where they are on their journey. Miles utilizes a variety of treatment modalities such as ACT, DBT, mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing to help clients build on existing strength and resiliency. Miles has worked with individuals in both inpatient and outpatient mental health settings across Canada. He began his counseling career working with Vancouver’s Odyssey Program, one of Canada’s first youth focused harm reduction addiction programs. While working at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, he focused on supporting those struggling with psychosis and concurrent disorders. Most recently, he has been providing therapy to children, youth and families with mental health and addiction challenges with the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Throughout his career, he has trained professionals on addiction, mental health and trauma informed care. He was part of the IWK Health Centre’s Concurrent Disorder leadership team, and has acted as a coach and trainer for trauma informed care at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Miles received his Bachelors of Social Work in 2001 from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and his Masters of Social Work in 2013 from Ryerson University in Toronto. He practices with an anti-oppressive framework and acknowledges how identities such as race, gender, sexual identity and economic background impact the lived realities of his clients. Miles likes collecting old dusty soul records; swimming in the ocean; sitting around a campfire; basketball; listening to the wisdom of his two young kids; and not taking himself too seriously.

Dr. Renée Janssen completed her medical training in General Internal Medicine at the University of British Columbia and completed the Addiction Medicine Fellowship through the BC Centre on Substance Use. She has been in medical practice for 3 years. In addition to her time at the Orchard Recovery Center, Dr. Jensen is Physician Lead for the Addiction Medicine Consult Team at Saint Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. She is the Site Lead for the Internal Medicine Ambulatory Rotation at St. Paul’s Hospital. Dr. Jensen also serves on the Opioid Stewardship Advisory Committee at St. Paul’s Hospital. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UBC Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine. Her interests include addiction medicine, central sensitization syndromes, and medical education. Orchard clients also benefit from her experience caring for patients with fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, and other similar disorders from her practice at the Complex Chronic Disease Program at BC Women’s Hospital.

James brings to the Orchard an extensive and diverse background as an Addiction Counsellor having worked with homeless Combat and Non Combat Veterans in San Diego as well as with clients in private treatment centres in Ontario and Saskatchewan. He has a proven history of working with a wide variety of people and provides passionate care based on ethical practices that enables client’s to help themselves. James builds and maintains professional relationships with clients, communicates effectively with persons from a wide variety of social, cultural and economic backgrounds, while acting as a supportive guide in a culturally competent manner. James relies on his own personal recovery and professional life skills experience to empower clients by (through) focusing on their own internal strengths and resources and helps them establish the skills necessary to make positive life changes. In addition he has an extensive background in sales and marketing that is invaluable in supporting clients seeking employment or making a career change. James is an avid hiker, backpacker and still has a passion for and plays hockey. James has BSW and completed a Diploma in Addiction / Case Management from McMaster University. James is a member of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation and is an ICADC (Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counsellor.
