| The first months after you stop drinking and/or using are filled with change and unfamiliar feelings. Withdrawal can cause feelings of confusion and tension and leave you feeling incapable of handling problems. Throughout your recovery, you will be faced with situations that are difficult to handle; therefore it is important to make your Relapse Prevention plan now. | |
What is Relapse? Relapse is a process that begins when you start slipping back into old behaviour patterns. A relapse begins long before you take your first drink or drug. You can successfully negotiate the road to recovery. Planning for a flat tire or an earthquake does not decrease the chance of either happening, but should it happen, you can be ready.
- Learn to deal with your problems and feelings as they come up.
- Learn to think through ways of handling high-risk situations.
- Build balance in your daily routine to reduce stress.
- Talk to friends, family, or a professional counselor. Let them help you.
